Four Angels still Holding Back the Four Winds: How long?

 

     I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, . . . .saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. Revelation 7: 2, 3, Authorized Version.

Everything around Him was repulsive. With these surroundings, He fasted forty days and forty nights, ‘and those days he did eat nothing.’ He was emaciated through long fasting and felt the keenest sense of hunger.  Christ’s Forty Days in the Wilderness of Temptation

 

See Matt. 4: 1-11.  Satan knew that everything concerning his prosperity depended on his success or failure in overcoming Christ in the wilderness of temptation. Disguised as an angel of light, apparently in answer to Christ’s prayer, he appears when Christ is at His weakest, most vulnerable condition in His forty-day fast.  Satan submitted Christ to his “very best,”—the subtlest of artifices and force of his powerful temptations to allure Christ from His allegiance to the Father and adherence to the moral law He himself established as the foundation of His eternal throne. He came “to magnify the law and make honorable” (Isa. 42: 21), not abrogate it.

Miracle comes from the Hebrew oth, “sign,” “omen,” “token,” “pele,” “wonder”; Greek dunamis, “power,” “deed of power,” “wonder,” semeion, “sign.” The English word “miracle”  is from the Latin miraculum, “an object of wonder, “ “a wonder,” “a wonderful thing” “a strange thing” “a marvel, “a marvelous thing,”  from mirari, “to wonder at,” “to be astonished at,” “to be amazed at.”

A.D. 27: John the Baptist, Christ’s prophesied forerunner, yielding to Christ’s gentle yet firm request, buried Him beneath the waters of the Jordan. “And straightway coming up out of the water,” Jesus “saw the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit like a dove descending upon Him.” (Gabriel told Zacharias the priest, John’s father that the child would be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb, and would go forth in the spirit and power of Elijah “to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Luke 1: 8-17).

Type is defined as “a figure, emblem, or symbol; a symbol or figure of something to come; a pattern.” Figure as something “to prefigure; to foreshow; to represent by typical or figurative resemblance; a pattern, emblem, type, image or imitation” A type is a literal representation of a spiritual fact.”  Taylor G. Bunch in his book, “Exodus and Advent Movements in Type and Antitype,” published by Teach Services Inc., p. 7, sets the tone of these series with these thoughts:

Forty is the numeric symbol of test, testing; probation.

I. FORTY DAYS

Length of the Flood . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Gen. 7: 17, N.K.J.V.
“Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth [fifteen cubits upward, vs. 20].” “And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.” v. 24. A Biblical month is 30 days.
