GOD’S PURPOSES FOR HIS PEOPLE REVEALED BY HIS PROPHETS – Part 3

Again, this first part of this series we are learning from direct from the Bible that having dreams and visions from God does not, in and of itself alone, make one a prophet of God’s order. 

Now see Judges 7: 9-15. To obtain a broader and proper context, read both chapters 6 and 7 on your own Bibles. You will understand and appreciate even more the truth of this subject. 

When, by God’s order to Gideon, the number of fighting men—whittled-down from originally twenty-two thousand, down to ten thousand, and finally only three hundred men—Gideon was ordered to go fight the combined host of the war-like Amalekites and Midianites.

But even after the earlier miracle God performed in answer to Gideon’s specified proof for his divine appointment to deliver Israel from the Midianite oppression, and God ordering him with the 300 to go to war, he was not yet fully convinced to take on the mighty host of the enemy who were “like grasshoppers for multitude.”

Then, knowing Gideon was still fearful, God ordered him to go with his servant to where the enemies were arrayed. And right here a certain unnamed non-Israelite, had a dream, which he revealed to an unidentified friend as well. Later, when Gideon “heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation thereof,” that Gideon “worshipped God, and returned to the host of Israel, saying, Arise, for the Lord has delivered into your

hand the host of Midian.”

Ah! God revealed a specific dream to an unidentified man of their ENEMY (thus, not a prophet!) in order to finally bolster the faith and courage of His OWN man to fight and defeat his enemy! 

This is the God whom I am learning to implicitly trust and willingly obey for “He changed not;” He is “the same yesterday, today, and forever,” according to inspiration, history, and prophecy!

God’s Purposes Revealed by Inspiration

GOD’S PURPOSES FOR HIS PEOPLE REVEALED BY HIS PROPHETS – Part 2 

Again, having dreams and visions—including encountering God in Christ face to face—in and of itself alone does not make one a prophet, that is, in the sense their role as a divine calling with their mission, message, work, and authority in the Plan of Redemption. 

We continue citing Bible examples to establish a sound  Biblical foundation: 

See JOSHUA 5: 13-15; 7: 10-15. Jehovah (the yet incarnate Jesus) appeared as “Captain of the Lords’ host” a couple of times to Joshua. 

As significant as Joshua’s role was—the divinely-chosen successor of Moses to finally lead the remnant of ancient Israel in their 38th year of wilderness wandering, to cross the Jordan river, and start possessing the earthly promised land—the actual appearance of Jehovah to him with specific special messages and instructions, did not make Joshua a prophet! 

Who was Joshua? First, his name: “(Joshu-a), or Jeshua, KJV once Jehoshua, once Jehoshuah, and once Hoshea; KJV of the New Testament JESUS (Jesus). Hebrew Yehoshua, “Yahweh is deliverance,” or ‘Yahweh is salvation,’ transliterated into Aramaic as Yeshua, and thence into Greek as ‘Ieaous.’ The name appears on an ancient Hebrew seal.” 

Then this brief history of Joshua’s life and works: 

   “A son of Nun of the tribe of Ephraim (Num. 13: 8, 16). He was Moses’ military commander during the wilderness wanderings….As Moses’ assistant or ‘minister,’ he accompanied Moses in the ascent of Mt. Sinai (ch. 24:13). Two years after the Exodus, Joshua represented his tribe on the expedition to first spy out Canaan. Among the 12, he and Caleb alone returned with a favorable report (Num. 13: 8; 14: 6-9; cf. 14: 7), and thus accorded the privilege of entering Canaan 38 years later (Josh 1: 10, 11). Shortly before his death, Moses installed Joshua as his successor (Num. 27: 18-23; Deut. 1:38; 31: 23). After the preliminary conquest of the heathen coalition of Canaanite kings, he proceeded to dividing the land among the 12 tribes. At the age of 110 he gathered Israel together and counseled them to be faithful to God, and died after (ch 24: 1-28, 29, 30).”

God’s Purposes Revealed by Inspiration

GOD’S PURPOSE FOR PROPHETS: TO REVEAL HIS PURPOSE TO HIS PEOPLE 

According to prophecy, the remnant church of prophecy is entrusted with the great privilege and honor, with its awesomely solemn responsibility for proclaiming the comprehensive prophecy of the Third Angel’s Message of Revelation 14, which is God’s final merciful warnings to mankind, that also prepares a people truly ready, according to the Bible’s definition, for Christ’s glorious second advent bringing His eternal rewards. Through John He declares, “And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Rev. 22: 14, KJV. See also Eccl. 12: 13, 14. 

Here, we shall focus on, as a series, not the prophecies but the prophets and their role in the plan of redemption of the gospel. 

First, while it is true that all true prophets (and special messengers) had visions and dreams given by God—this in itself ALONE did not render them prophets bearing the prophetic credentials and its office. 

This is extremely important today, as the prophets, Christ himself, and repeated by the apostles, prophesied and warned, that in the last days many false prophets shall arise and deceive countless with counterfeit prophecies. Also, many will think they have been given the prophetic gift simply because they are having “visions and dreams.”     

Now, read for yourselves the following examples in the Bible: 

    Gen. 20: 3-16. Dream given by God to a Gentile, Abimelech, king of Gerar. 

    Gen. 37: 5-11. Joseph was given two dreams of prophetic portent; but he was not a prophet, but “a man of God.”

     Gen. 40: 5–19. Dreams given by God to Pharaoh’s butler and baker 

     Gen. 41: 1-36. The Pharaoh himself given two dreams by God. 

    Job 33: 14-18 Dreams and visions sometimes given of God to warn and save from danger. 

Again, having dreams and visions, though given by God, in and of itself does not automatically make one a prophet. There is so much more involved! Knowing the whole truth regarding prophets, according to God’s order and appointment, is a safeguard against being deceived by false (fake) prophets and their counterfeit prophecies and false messages. 

See Luke 11: 1-13. With “importunity” that refuses denial, as Jesus taught, “ask, seek, and knock” for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, enlightenment, and empowerment as we cover these as our spiritual “manna” topic.

God’s Purposes Revealed by Inspiration

THE PURPOSE OF THE GARDEN OF EDEN HOME 

Foundational Texts (KJV)

Gen. 2: 8, 9: “The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man He had formed. And out of ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also, in the midst of the garden.” 

Col. 1: 16-18: “For by Him (Christ, “the image of the invisible God”) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created BY Him, and FOR Him. And He is BEFORE all things, and BY HIM all things consist. . . For it pleased the Father that IN HIM ALL FULNESS dwell.” (See also Col. 2: 9, 10; Rev. 4: 11). 

The Original Home School: The Garden of Eden School

Extract follows from Ellen G. White, Education, pp. 19, 20 (all emphasis and bracketed words provided): 

   “The system of education instituted at the beginning of the world was to be a MODEL for man THROUGHOUT ALL AFTERTIME. 

    “As an illustration of its principles a MODEL SCHOOL was established in Eden, the HOME of our first parents. 

    “The GARDEN OF EDEN was the SCHOOLROOM, NATURE was the LESSON BOOK, the CREATOR Himself was the INSTRUCTOR, and the PARENTS of the human family were the STUDENTS. 

   “Created to be ‘the image and glory of God’ (1 Cor. 11: 7), Adam and Eve had received ENDOWMENTS not unworthy of their HIGH DESTINY[the Biblical ‘election’/predestination]. 

   “Graceful and symmetrical in form, regular and beautiful in feature, their countenances glowing with the tint of health and THE LIGHT of joy and hope, they bore in their outward resemblance a LIKENESS of their Maker. 

    “Nor was this likeness manifest in the physical likeness ONLY. Every faculty of mind and soul

REFLECTED the Creator’s glory. Endowed with high mental and spiritual GIFTS, Adam and Eve were made but ‘little lower than the angels’ (Heb. 2: 7), that they might not only DISCERN THE WONDERS OF THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE, BUT COMPREHEND MENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBLIGATIONS. 

    “[Gen. 2: 8, 9 quoted]. HERE, AMIDST THE BEAUTIFUL SCENES OF NATURE UNTOUCHED BY SIN, OUR FIRST PARENTS WERE TO RECEIVE THEIR EDUCATION. 

   “In His interest for His children, our Heavenly Father PERSONALLY directed their education. Often they were visited by His messengers, THE HOLY ANGELS, and from them received counsel and instruction. 

    “Often as they WALKED in the garden in the cool of the day [not walking or riding any man-made vehicles on ‘streets of gold’ or ‘flying with wings’ in any city of skyscrapers], they HEARD THE VOICE OF GOD, and FACE TO FACE HELD COMMUNION WITH THE IMMORTAL. HIS THOUGHTS toward them were ‘thoughts of peace, and not evil.’ Jer. 29: 11. His EVERY PURPOSE was their highest good.” (End of extract). 

NOTE: Where there is life, there is the life of God the Life giver. Everything else man-made, though having the “the form and appearance”, is lifeless, dead—plastic, synthetic, yes, artificial. All these things shall eternally “pass away,” and with “the elements, shall melt with fervent heat” when Christ returns!

God’s Purposes Revealed by Inspiration: THE EDUCATION THAT PREPARES FOR ETERNAL LEARNING 

TEXTS: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isa. 55: 6, 8-9, KJV. 

Paul says: “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this ONE THING I DO, forgetting those things which are behind, and REACHING FORTH which are before, I PRESS TOWARD THE MARK for the prize of the HIGH CALLING of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as BE PERFECT, be THUS MINDED: and if in any thing ye be OTHERWISE minded, God shall REVEAL even this unto you.” Phil. 3: 13-15. 

We resume quoting Ellen G. White’s book, Education, pp. 19, 20 (all emphases and bracketed words provided):

   Q. What is the divine Educator and Teacher’s ideal, goal, object, and standard to attain for those who claim to be God’s children? 

    “Higher than the human thought can reach is God’s ideal for His children. Godliness—GODLIKENESS—is the goal to be reached.        

    “Before the student [of God’s word in the ‘school of Christ’] is opened a path of CONTINUAL PROGRESS, he has an OBJECT to achieve, a STANDARD to attain, that includes everything that is GOOD, and PURE, and NOBLE. He will advance AS FAST and AS FAR as possible in every branch of TRUE KNOWLEDGE. But his EFFORTS will be directed to objects AS MUCH HIGHER than mere SELFISH AND TEMPORAL interests as the heavens are higher than the earth.

   “He [the human teacher or instructor] who CO-OPERATES with the DIVINE PURPOSE in imparting to the youth [literally and spiritually] A KNOWLEDGE OF GOD, and molding the character into HARMONY with His, does a high and noble work. 

    “As he awakens a DESIRE [in his students] to reach God’s ideal, he presents AN EDUCATION THAT IS AS HIGH AS HEAVEN AND AS BROAD AS THE UNIVERSE; AN EDUCATION THAT CANNOT BE COMPLETED IN THIS LIFE, but that will be CONTINUED IN THE LIFE TO COME; an education that secures to the successful student his PASSPORT from the PREPARATORY SCHOOL OF EARTH to the higher grade, the school above.” (End extract)

God’s Purposes Revealed by Inspiration: TO TEACH STUDENTS TO BECOME THINKERS, NOT MERE REFLECTORS OF OTHER MEN’S THOUGHTS 

Texts: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2: 5. “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance  in the saints” Ephesians 1: 17, 18, KJV. 

Did the school/s where you were educated and acquired whatever degrees/specialties with corresponding diplomas, fulfill this fundamental purpose of education, that is, according to the God’s desire and plan? 

Read on from this continuing extracts from the book Education, by Ellen G. White, p. 17 (all emphasis and bracketed words provided):

    “Every human being,  [originally] created in the image of God, is endowed with a POWER akin to that of the Creator—individuality, power to think and do. The men [and women] in whom this power is DEVELOPED are the men who bear responsibilities, who are leaders in enterprise, and who influence character. 

    “It is the work of TRUE EDUCATION to develop this power, to train the youth to be THINKERS, and NOT MERE REFLECTORS OF OTHER MEN’S THOUGHTS. 

    “Instead of confining their study to that which men have said or written, let students be directed to the SOURCE OF TRUTH, to the vast field opened to research in NATURE AND REVELATION [the Holy Scriptures]. 

     “Let them contemplate the GREAT FACTS OF DUTY AND DESTINY, and the MIND will expand and strengthen. Instead of EDUCATED WEAKLINGS, institutions of learning may send forth men strong to think and act, men who are masters, not slaves of circumstances, men who possess breadth of mind, clearness of thought, and the courage of their convictions. 

    “Such an education provides more than mental discipline; it provides more than physical training. It strengthens the CHARACTER, so that TRUTH AND UPRIGHTNESS are NOT SACRIFICED to selfish desire or worldly ambition [!]. Instead of some MASTER PASSION becoming a power to destroy, every motive and desire are brought into CONFORMITY to the GREAT PRINCIPLES OF RIGHT [as clearly defined in God’s law]. 

    “As the PERFECTION OF HIS CHARACTER is dwelt upon, the mind is renewed, and the soul [the whole living person] is re-created in the IMAGE OF GOD.”

   Q. “What education can be higher than this? What can equal it in value? 

    Ans. Read Job 28: 15-18 for yourself in your Bible, preferably the Authorized Version or the KJV.

God’s Purposes Revealed by Inspiration: CREATIVE WORKS AND WRITTEN WORD: BASIS OF TRUE EDUCATION

Texts: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handiwork. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. . . “ Ps. 19: 1-4. “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. . . for He spake, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.” 33: 5, 9, KJV.

the inspired pen of Ellen G. White on this vital subject (all emphases and bracketed words supplied): 

    “Since God is the Source of all true knowledge, it is, as we have seen, THE FIRST OBJECT OF EDUCATION to direct our minds to His own revelation of Himself. Adam and Eve received direct communion with God; and they learned of Him THROUGH HIS WORKS. All created things, IN THEIR ORIGINAL PERFECTION, were an expression of the THOUGHT OF GOD. To Adam and Eve NATURE WAS TEEMING WITH DIVINE WISDOM. 

    “But by the transgression, MAN WAS CUT OFF from learning from God through DIRECT COMMUNION, and to great degree, through His

works [of creation]. The earth [now] marred and defiled by sin, reflects but DIMLY, the Creator’s glory. 

    “It is true that His OBJECT LESSONS ARE NOT OBLITERATED. Upon every page of the GREAT VOLUME

of His created works may STILL be traced His handwriting. NATURE STILL SPEAKS OF HER CREATOR [versus the atheistical naysayers and godless evolutionists]. 

    “Yet these revelations are [now] partial and imperfect [defiled and marred by sin]. And in our FALLEN STATE, with weakened powers and restricted vision, we are INCAPABLE of interpreting aright. WE NEED THE FULLER REVELATION OF HIMSELF THAT GOD HAS GIVEN IN THE WITNESS OF HIS WORD.” 

   “The Holy Scriptures are the PERFECT STANDARD OF TRUTH, and as such should be given the HIGHEST PLACE IN EDUCATION. To obtain an

education WORTHY of the name, we must receive a KNOWLEDGE OF GOD [the Creator] and of CHRIST, the Redeemer, as THEY are revealed on the Sacred Word.” – End quote from Education, pp. 16, 17.

TRUE ‘HIGHER EDUCATION’ AND ITS ORIGIN AND SOURCE 

We resume quoting from the inspired pen of Ellen G. White in her book, Education, pp. 13, 14 (all emphases and bracketed words provided): 

   “Our ideas of education take too narrow and too low a range. There is a need of a broader scope, a higher aim. 

     “TRUE EDUCATION MEANS MORE THAN THE PURSUIT OF A CERTAIN COURSE OF STUDY. It means more than a preparation for the life that NOW is. It has to do with the WHOLE BEING, and with the WHOLE PERIOD OF EXISTENCE possible to man. 

   “It is the HARMONIOUS DEVELOPMENT of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It PREPARES the student for the JOY OF SERVICE IN THIS WORLD and the HIGHER JOY OF WIDER SERVICE IN THE WORLD TO COME. 

    “The SOURCE of such education is brought to view in these words of Holy Writ, pointing to the Infinite One: In Him ‘are hid all the treasures of wisdom.’ Colossians 2: 3. ‘He hath counsels and understanding.’ Job 12: 13. 

    “In these days much is said  concerning the nature and importance of ‘higher education.’ THE TRUE ‘HIGHER EDUCATION’ is that imparted by Him ‘with whom is wisdom and strength’ (Job 12:13), out of whose mouth ‘cometh knowledge and understanding.’ Proverbs 2:6. 

     “In the knowledge of God all true knowledge and real development have their SOURCE. Wherever we turn, in the physical, the mental, or spiritual realm; in whatever we behold, APART FROM THE BLIGHT OF SIN, this knowledge is revealed. Whatever line of investigation we pursue, WITH A SINCERE PURPOSE TO ARRIVE AT TRUTH, we are brought in touch with the unseen, Mighty Intelligence that is working IN and THROUGH all. 

    “The MIND OF MAN is brought into COMMUNION with the MIND OF GOD, the FINITE with the INFINITE. The effect of such a communion on body, mind, and soul is BEYOND ESTIMATE. 

    “IN THIS COMMUNION IS FOUND THE HIGHEST EDUCATION. IT IS GOD’S OWN METHOD OF DEVELOPMENT. ‘Acquaint now thyself with Him’ (Job 22: 21), is His message to MANKIND. 

    “The method outlined in these words was the method followed in the education of the father of our race. When in the GLORY OF SINLESS MANHOOD Adam stood in holy Eden, it was thus that God instructed him [the communion ‘method’ described]. 

   “[Thusly], in order to understand WHAT IS COMPREHENDED in the work of [true] education, we need to consider both the NATURE OF MAN and the PURPOSE OF GOD in creating him [‘in His image and after His likeness’]. We need to consider also THE CHANGE in man’s condition through the coming in of ‘knowledge of evil,’ and God’s PLAN for still fulfilling the GLORIOUS PURPOSE IN THE EDUCATION OF THE HUMAN RACE [both before and after fall of man in Eden].” (End of extract).
